Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to review the goal on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at each end of the field

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had netted only one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on early November at 8 PM.

Spurs: Spurs go to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
